Big Dog was one of the countless boutique bike makers to emerge from the chopper craze of the early aughts. Along with reality television stalwarts like Orange County Choppers and West Coast Choppers, Big Dog built small-batch customs using S&S V-twins, off-the-shelf parts and lots of chrome and billet. To go along with the theme, each of the company’s limited-run models was named after a different kind of canine—Ridgeback, Husky, Mastiff, Coyote, Pitbull and so on. Each of these bikes could be customized within an inch of its life with liveries and custom parts produced by Big Dog itself.

Among Big Dog’s many dog-themed bikes was the Wolf, a long, lean, low-slung bike in the pro street style that was popular at the time. It had a wide, radically raked front end with a skinny wheel, a fat rear tire and sinuous bodywork that seemed to flow from the front of the tank to the tip of the rear fender in one piece. It was powered by a proprietary air-cooled, four-stroke, 121 CI S&S X-Wedge V-twin cradled in a steel twin downtube frame. The engine moved its power to the rear wheel via a 6-speed manual gearbox and a belt final drive. It had a swoopy swingarm sprung by a Harley Softail-style rear suspension, disc brakes at both ends, forward controls and acres of billet and chrome. Despite its radical custom looks, the Wolf was a very street-ready machine and equipped with all the lights, mirrors, gauges and other safety features a modern bike requires.
